The Use of Polyols in Pediatrics

1969

Children have a high demand of sugars or similar substances. These ought to be tolerable and easily utilized, furthermore palatable if given by mouth, and apt to supply a sufficient caloric intake. Often, carbohydrates are used as the only source of calories for ill children, e. g. in case of acute disturbances of the intestinal tract (caused by infection or incompatibility of food ingested, by malabsorption syndromes etc.) and in stress situations.

The diagnosis and management of gastric cancer: Expert discussion and recommendations from the 12th ESMO/World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer, B…

2011

Well-recognized experts in the field of gastric cancer discussed during the 12th European Society Medical Oncology (ESMO)/World Congress Gastrointestinal Cancer (WCGIC) in Barcelona many important and controversial topics on the diagnosis and management of patients with gastric cancer. This article summarizes the recommendations and expert opinion on gastric cancer. It discusses and reflects on the regional differences in the incidence and care of gastric cancer, the definition of gastro-esophageal junction and its implication for treatment strategies and presents the latest recommendations in the staging and treatment of primary and metastatic gastric cancer. Recognition is given to the ne…

Jejunoileal bypass as the main procedure in the onset of immune-related conditions: the model of BADAS

2013

Bariatric surgery represents a common approach for the control of severe morbid obesity, reducing caloric intake by modifying the anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract. Following jejunoileal bypass, a large spectrum of complications has been described, with rheumatic manifestation present in up to 20% of cases. Although bowel bypass syndrome, also called blind loop syndrome, is a well-recognized complication of jejunoileal bypass, the same syndrome was recognized in patients who had not had intestinal bypass surgery, and the term the 'bowel-associated dermatosis-arthritis syndrome' (BADAS) was coined. The pathogenesis of BADAS is as yet poorly understood and only few data concerning this is…

Calorie Restriction in Mammals and Simple Model Organisms

2014

Calorie restriction (CR), which usually refers to a 20–40% reduction in calorie intake, can effectively prolong lifespan preventing most age-associated diseases in several species. However, recent data from both human and nonhumans point to the ratio of macronutrients rather than the caloric intake as a major regulator of both lifespan and health-span. In addition, specific components of the diet have recently been identified as regulators of some age-associated intracellular signaling pathways in simple model systems. The comprehension of the mechanisms underpinning these findings is crucial since it may increase the beneficial effects of calorie restriction making it accessible to a broad…
